A Super Alaskan Picture Book
I read this book to my second grade class during the Thanksgiving holiday. They loved it! The text flows wonderfully for a read aloud and the illustrations are simply stunning. Alaskan kids could relate easily to this story of the circle of life with a holiday theme. A definate must have for teachers in colder climates!

Civil and Savage Encounters: The Worldly Travel Letters of an Imperial Russian Navy Officer, 1860-1861 (North Pacific Studies Series ; No. 5)
Published in Paperback by Oregon Historical Society (February, 1983)
Authors: Pavel Nikolaevich Golovin, E. A. Crownhart-Vaughan, and Karen Beyers

An obscure, but wonderful book!
I found a copy of CIVIL AND SAVAGE ENCOUNTERS in a little bookstore while vacationing in Alaska. The Alaskan landscape is beautiful and awe inspiring. However, once I started reading this diary, I couldn't stop. It is a treasure! I stress, I became so engrossed in Golovin's exceptional descriptions, I totally lost interest in the beauty of Alaska. I don't understand why this diary did not become a best seller.

I loved Golovin's comparative descriptions between his beloved Russia and Europe. Americans will be mesmerized by his perception of the American Civil War.

Golovin has a charming and wonderful vividness in his writing style. Could he have intended for his diary to be published? On the other hand, I have often heard it said that we have lost the art of good writing. We'll never learn the answer. Regardless, CIVIL AND SAVAGE ENCOUNTERS is a wonderful piece of literature.

Cold climate utilities delivery design manual

Water & Wastewater Treatment in permafrost country!
I obtained an old 1979 copy from the University Library. Although out of date it is an excellent resource for the engineer needing to know what factors affect water and wastewater distribution and treatment in regions of extreme cold. It is a 4" thick three ring binder, the pages are heavy and durable. A variety of topics are covered; Water source; water storage and distribution; wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal; utilitdors; fire protection; solid wastemanagement and more. You will still need basic engineering knowledge and other design resources. This book deals specifically with application of the aforementioned topics in cold climates. There are a large number of drawings, graphs, and tables with useful data. Also there are a number of pictures detailing existing (in 1979) structures and applications. If you're designing a water treatment facility or a wastewater treatment plant for a village or small town in areas of extreme cold (permafrost) then you'll need a copy of this! I am currently a Senior at the University of Alaska Fairbanks working on a B.S. in Civil Engineering.

Crossing Alaska through Photographs
Crossing Alaska is a "large size" book containing a combination of fantastic color photographs and information about America's last great wilderness adventure: Alaska.

The author, situated in Alaska, during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline, has captured the great beauty and size of Alaska in wonderful color photographs. You'll see the bears, caribou and the playful sea otters.

Her descriptions of the country and the breathtaking landscapes meld perfectly with the full page color photographs. This book is found in many of the hotels in Alaska and near the Denali National Forest as a "come on" to get you to go out and really see the back country; it is well worth it.

Lao's review
This is another rare catalog which captures the best artifacts from the museum exhibit. Lots of excellent photographs of the appliqued and embroidered fish skin coats of the Sibero-Alaskan peoples, fishing gear, shaman tools and every day household items. Chapters are arranged by tribe, and give excellent insight into both their physical and spiritual practices. Great maps showing the migratory routes of the various tribes. An invaluable resource for the study of these cultures.
